Over the years, we have witnessed the demolition of several iconic buildings, particularly the oldest shopping centre in Malaysia, Ampang Park Mall. When it was announced that it would be converted into an MRT station, protests erupted, and efforts were made in hopes of preventing the mall from closing down. Sadly, the historic establishment was eventually replaced by the now-standing Ampang Park MRT station.

So, what happens when a mall no longer attracts customers? One netizen recently suggested converting the buildings into schools, which isn’t entirely a bad idea. However, many were opposed to the idea of turning one particular mall into something else. Here’s the story:

For context, a Twitter user by the name of @/xxxbyefelicia posted a proposal to convert some of these underused malls into schools. The user also listed several shopping centres they believed could be repurposed as educational institutions, with Amcorp Mall being one of them. The post has since gone viral, sparking discussion among netizens, but many argued that Amcorp Mall should remain untouched.

One of the main reasons Malaysians oppose the idea of losing the beloved building is due to the items sold there. Amcorp Mall is well-known among hobbyists, as it features stores and flea markets that sell collectables such as vinyl records, vintage clothing and comic books, second-hand books, and rare items that would be almost impossible to find elsewhere in Malaysia.

Malaysians also argued that, although it may not be a high-end luxury mall, it doesn’t need to be flooded with customers, as the locals and regulars there are enough to keep the business thriving. Even foreigners share the same sentiment, with a British content creator once describing Amcorp Mall as a “thrifty vintage heaven.” Fortunately, there are currently no plans whatsoever for Amcorp Mall to be shut down.

From Shopping To Learning? Netizen Proposes Converting Dead Malls Into Schools

If you ask us, we would personally love for the beloved mall to remain around for decades to come. If you haven’t visited Amcorp Mall yet, we recommend you take a trip this weekend — who knows, you might find something you’ve been looking for.
