When it comes to colleges and universities, there are several well-known names. We’re sure you can probably list out a few famous ones, both locally and internationally. However, there’s no denying the prestige that the name Harvard University brings.

This year, five Malaysians have broken the record for getting admitted into the famous undergraduate school. According to alumnus Wan Nadiah Wan Mohd Abdullah Yaakob, Malaysia previously only had two students admitted and at times, none.

It was announced with great pride that Chooi Je Qin (Johor), Herman Leong Xin Yang (Penang), Ishant Shah (Penang), Carisma Michaela Wong (Sabah) and Lee Ee Jenn (KL) will be joining the Harvard College Class of 2026. The five are planning on pursuing studies in fields ranging from astrophysics, biochemistry, economics, environmental science and public policy, politics and sociology.

Their acceptance is made all the more impressive, considering the university’s acceptance rate this year. Out of 61,220 applicants, Harvard has only accepted 3.19%. Apparently, this is the lowest acceptance rate in its 386-year history.

In addition to the admissions announcement, Harvard also revealed that they were increasing the threshold for full financial aid. Initially, it was US65,000 but has since been increased to USD75,000 (~RM316,000). As such, for families earning below USD75,000 annually, they will not be charged tuition. This is in line with Harvard College’s mission to “provide educational opportunities to the best and brightest students around the world from all backgrounds, regardless of their social or economic status”.

Each student has their own passion and the dedication to pursue their field of interest. They also have been actively helping out their communities in their own ways.  We too would like to offer our congratulations to them and hope they enjoy their time at the prestigious university!
