Food can bring people together, but opinions on it can tear families apart. Needless to say, a local netizen’s opinion about Sabah food divided locals when he boldly claimed their food did not taste good.

A netizen, allegedly from West Malaysia recently uploaded quite the controversial opinion on Twitter. Apparently, he opined that food in East Malaysia was “not tasty”. Unsurprisingly, his opinion drew a fair amount of ire from others.

On 29th October, a local netizen took to Twitter to share his thoughts on food in East Malaysia after living there for over eight years. “In 2015, I started working in Sabah and I hadn’t started abstaining from sugar yet. A plate of fried rice cost RM7. It did not taste good,” he said.

“It’s 2023 in Sabah. I’ve abstained from sugar and my body is 400% healthier. A plate of fried rice (now costs) RM12. It still doesn’t taste good,” he continued. “(I’ve) since accepted that (food from) restaurants in Sabah simply do not taste good.”

However, he added that he’s had the opportunity to enjoy food cook by his teachers, thanks to potlucks held in school. “This just means that the people in Sabah who can cook delicious food aren’t the ones running the restaurants. That is the story,” he ended.

Others were quick to agree, with several sharing their own experiences with food in East Malaysia. One claimed he had once ordered buttermilk chicken from a store in Sarikei, Sarawak and had been sorely disappointed. “Apparently the recipe there (requires one) to add condensed milk to the sauce, without at least mixing it in,” they stated.

Another opined the food not only tasted bad, but was also expensive. A netizen, who claimed to be a Sabahan, agreed as well, before claiming most of their core food were soup items. However, there were also plenty of netizens who disagreed.

Several took issue with his comment, claiming it was rude. “Please post your content responsibly,” one said. “Going to another state and saying their food does not taste good is disrespectful.” Another claimed it might simply be an issue of preference. “(As a Sabahan,) I’ve worked at East Malaysia and found their food bad because I think it’s too heavy and spicy,” they shared.

Well, as the saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. However, we should probably still be respectful of each other’s opinions, especially about food, at the very least.
