Malaysia capped off the 29th Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) at was perhaps their best sporting event ever with a medal tally of 145 gold, 92 silver, and 86 bronze medals. In view of the outstanding achievement of the Malaysian contingent in the games, which ended yesterday, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak declared 4th September a public holiday.

This means that Malaysians will enjoy a very long weekend starting with today’s Merdeka Day celebrations, tomorrow’s Hari Raya Haji celebrations, before going on to Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (4th September).

PM Najib Razak made the official announcement during his Merdeka Day speech at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil after the SEA Games closing ceremony. “It is not easy to declare a holiday because Malaysia has too many public holidays but since we have achieved an outstanding result in the SEA Games through the unwavering support of the various races and the excellent performance of our athletes, on behalf of the government I declare Sept 4 as a public holiday,” he said.

We’ll just put it right here 😉
