Local Man Slams Malaysia Airlines For Downgrading His Business Class Seat To Economy

Getting a free last-minute upgrade for your seat on a flight is the best feeling. But how would you feel if it was the other way around? Well, this man recently had to experience getting his seat downgraded on a Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight – and he was not happy with the whole incident.

Daniel Chan took to Facebook to detail his horrible experience with the airline during a family trip to Shanghai in May. He had booked six business class seats for his family – but two out of six tickets got downgraded to economy class on the day of the flight “without prior notification”. Despite his attempts to have the two tickets remain in business class, someone from his family had to sit alone in economy class.

While unconfirmed, Daniel claimed that his business class seat was given to an employee of Malaysia Airlines as he spotted a man in a MAS uniform sitting in the seat he had pre-selected. However, a few comments spoke on this, explaining that the employee could be a pilot transported to fly another aircraft. One commenter even mentioned that, according to the airline’s agreements, the pilot must be seated in business class and dress in their uniform and name badge.

After his trip, Daniel contacted Malaysia Airlines’ customer service to request compensation for his experience. However, the airline compensated him with one free upgrade to business class that is only valid within the next six months. In the Facebook post, Daniel also included the letter from the airline regarding the compensation and proof of booking.

After sharing his experience on Facebook, many users reacted to the post, with most of them showing disappointment in Malaysia Airlines and how poorly they handled Daniel’s case. Many advised him to bring the issue to the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) for better compensation.

At the time of writing, it is unknown whether Daniel will bring the case up to MAVCOM – but if he does, we hope he can receive better compensation for his experience.
