Malaysia, a land rich with nature and culture, serves as an optimum travel destination for many travellers from all over the world. However, staying on budget during a holiday can be tough, especially when there’s good food all around.
According to collected data from online travel agency Agoda, Kuching, Sarawak, has earned the top spot as Malaysia’s most affordable holiday destination. With an average nightly room rate of RM227.64, Kuching sweeps over Kuala Terengganu, which held the top spot earlier in the year.

The cheapest summer destination list, which compiles a list of 10 cities throughout Southeast Asia, is topped by Surabaya, Indonesia, with an average room rate of RM150.33. The list follows with Tirupati, India (RM158.92) in second place; Hat Yai, Thailand (RM167.51) in third and Sarawak’s capital city landing in sixth place.
In a statement by Agoda Malaysia and Brunei country director, Fabian Teja, to the New Straits Times, “Destinations like Kuching offer travellers rich cultural experiences without a hefty price tag. Whether it’s exploring heritage trails in Kuching, indulging in street food in Hatyai or discovering temples in Tirupati, these places give travellers the chance to explore without stretching their wallets.”

He adds that the diversity of destinations on the list showcases how summer travel can be both memorable and budget-friendly. With Kuching at the top of the list, will you make it your next cuti-cuti Malaysia trip?
