During a press conference announcing the service’s price hike today, KTMB commuter services general manager Azshidah Shah Shahari told reporters that their current system will be replaced by the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC).

The AFC will be operating by June 2016 and intergration with Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), Light Rail Transits (LRT), and monorail services are assumed to be ready by 2017.

On a separate note, Prasarana group chief executive Datuk Azmi Abdul Aziz announced a new distance-based fare collection sysyem for 3 of its lines, namely the LRT Kelana Jaya Line, Ampang Line, and the KL Monorail Line.

He revealed that the new ticket prices would consist of a single flag fall of 70 sen, based on the different blocks of distances. Azmi demonstrated that “the further a rider went, the price charges would be reduced in each distance block”.

For instance, riders would be charged 26.4 sen per km for distances of 4.1km to 9 km. For 9.1km to 14 km, it would be 21.6 sen per km. It would be 10.8 sen per km for trips above 24km.

In addition, Azmi said that rides are subjected to a special extra charge known as the Transit Acquirer System, which he said was put in place by the Land Public Tranport Commission (SPAD).

It was reported that the construction of MRT Line 1, which begun in August 2012, is expected to begin its operations in July 2017.
