In Malaysia, we can find mixed rice restaurants pretty much everywhere. As the name suggests, mixed rice, commonly known as economy rice or nasi campur in Malay, is a dish that offers a cheap meal option for people. To foreigners, this concept of economy rice might be new to them, but to us, it is something integrated into our daily lives.

Not long ago, a Korean man visited a mixed rice restaurant in Malaysia for the first time. When it came to paying for his food, the restaurant owner gave him a scolding. Here’s what happened:

In the video shared by his girlfriend on her Xianhongshu, the Korean man was surprised when he saw the many dishes, gravy, and dressing in the mixed rice restaurant. “I want to try everything,” he said. He could not narrow down which dishes he wanted, so he decided to take some of every dish he wanted to try.

When the girlfriend saw this, she exclaimed, “My whole 27 years, I have never seen someone who eats economy rice like this!” She added that she instantly regretted saying that he could take a bit of everything because she fully expected her beau to be scolded upon payment. In which, he was.

After he ended up having to pay RM12, the Korean man later mentioned that he was taught a lesson by the restaurant owner. The owner said that even though economy rice is calculated by how much one takes, he was told not to take a bit of each dish. “If you take your food like such, I wouldn’t know how to calculate,” the owner added.

Coming across the post, netizens had quite some things to say in regard to the Korean’s first experience. Some netizens commented that he tried something that they always wanted to try, whereas others said that the way he took the dishes is very similar to Korean side dishes. Going back to his roots, it seems.

  • “He did something I always wanted to try.”
  • “Him taking a bit of everything really looked like Korean side dishes.”
  • “This is economy rice, not a buffet. Haha.”
