KLP48, the Malaysian sister group of AKB48, was recently embroiled in a racism controversy after an alleged group chat involving several members was leaked online. The messages reportedly contained racist remarks directed at the group’s foreign members.
The group’s management later confirmed that an internal review had been conducted and that the members involved had received strict warnings. Despite this, both the group and the company continued to face criticism, with fans expressing concerns over how the situation was handled. Here’s the latest update on the matter:

Over the weekend, KLP48’s management released a follow-up statement addressing the controversy, as well as acknowledging its own shortcomings. In the statement, the company said: “We acknowledge that this situation was, in part, influenced by management’s own shortcomings. From the early stages of KLP48, certain management practices may have been perceived as favouring more experienced members. We take full responsibility for this and sincerely regret any misunderstanding that may have arisen as a result.”
The management added that it would continue to improve its internal processes to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. In addition, the company stated that it would take legal action against individuals who spread rumours or leaked private information about the members when the issue first surfaced. The statement has received mixed reactions from fans. Some thanked management for finally addressing the situation properly. Others argued that, while it is positive that the company acknowledged its shortcomings, this does not excuse the alleged racism or hostility displayed by the local members.

In other news, like AKB48 and its other sister groups, KLP48 will have their very own theatre, where they can perform for fans and host meet-and-greet events. The official pre-opening of the KLP48 Theatre took place yesterday (Sunday, 28th December) at LaLaport BBCC Mall, giving invited guests a preview of what fans can look forward to experiencing next year. The grand opening of the theatre will take place sometime in April.
