If you’re a frequent traveller then it should be no surprise that you’re to pay for the passenger service charge (PSC)(formerly known as ‘Airport Tax’). The rates depend on where you’re travelling to but it seems that you’d need to do some recalculating as the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) has announced some major changes to the rates.

Yesterday (Tuesday, 12th March), Mavcom announced the revised PSC rates that will take effect starting 1st June of this year. According to the statement, all international departures from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 will incur a PSC of RM73 while those from Terminal 2 will incur RM50.

It was said that these new rates are regardless of whether the passenger is travelling within ASEAN countries or beyond. However, the PSC for domestic flights will remain at RM11 at all airports except Senai Airport. In case you’re unaware, the PSC for flights to ASEAN countries is currently priced at RM35, regardless of whether the passengers are departing from KLIA Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.

Apart from that, Mavcom said that they will be introducing a transfer PSC across all airports. According to the commission, the rate for domestic travel through all airports is RM7 while international ones through KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are RM42 and RM29 respectively. The statement also added that the rates were revised in order to support the aviation sector’s recovery post-Covid-19.

Netizens were unhappy with the new changes after the news broke out. Many complained about the poorly maintained facilities at KLIA not being prioritised while others said that passengers should receive better services and benefits from these hiked-up prices.

The revised PSC will take effect starting from 1st June 2024 until 31st December 2026. You can read the full statement below or go to the official Mavcom website for more information on the new rates as well as the benefits passengers would receive.
