Bank scams can happen to anyone at anytime. In fact, local host and travel influencer Jason Phang (贾森) recently had a close brush with one such scam.

You may be familiar with a recent scam that involves siphoning money out of your bank account via several transactions. Notably enough, the transactions are done via Facebook ads. Well, artist Jason Phang narrowly avoided being another victim of said scam, thanks to his bank!

The artist shared yesterday (26th April) that he had fallen asleep and woken up to notifications on his phone. A screenshot showed several pending approvals from his credit card for six different transactions, all from Facebook ads. The transaction amounts varied between RM9.54 to RM31.80, totaling to RM97.52.

Knowing he hadn’t spent a lick of cash, Jason was quick to realise someone had stolen his credit card details and was attempting to filch his money. “Since I didn’t reply to the SMS at the time, the bank immediately blocked the credit card first,” Jason shared. “The disaster was averted.” The artist also made sure to thank his bank for their quick action.

Netizens added that they too have been suffering from the same scam, with several bemoaning the lost of their hard earned cash. Others pointed out that they too had accounts with the same bank as Jason, and had also been hit by the scam.

Jason Phang isn’t the only one who was affected by a scam recently. Dato’ Ho Fong Lee too had a brush with another bank scam, but unlike Jason, Dato’ Ho ended up losing RM100,000. Well, there’s no denying Jason’s luck! But, we do encourage netizens to take steps to ensure their bank details are well-protected online.
