Malaysia boasts a multicultural society where its locals take pride in maintaining and preserving traditions and cultures – but how can the country showcase its rich heritage and culture when one of its most important heritage sites is not well-maintained?
That was the sentiment of Twitter user JamalJdin, who tweeted his dissatisfaction about the lack of maintenance for Istana Budaya, Malaysia’s national theatre. Jamal tweeted, “Does Istana Budaya not have the budget to beautify its exterior? The country is advancing with tons of tourists, but things like these are not taken care of.” Along with the tweet, the user included an image of Istana Budaya looking unkempt, particularly its roof.

The tweet had many netizens in agreement with Jamal, urging the local government to place more importance on renovating the heritage site. Some also mocked the government’s lack of priority, saying that shopping malls are even more well-maintained than culture and heritage sites. Besides its roughed exterior, netizens also shared other issues with the building, lamenting the rundown interior. Others commented on its facilities, like the cafe, saying it is only open during events.
However, some revealed that Istana Budaya will soon undergo an overhaul, closing its doors for about three years for renovation. According to news reports, the plans for closure to accommodate the renovation and maintenance work will begin next year. The building will apparently reopen its doors to visitors in 2026. It would be the first time the building will undergo major repairs and maintenance since it opened 25 years ago.

We believe many of these comments are from locals who only want to see our country’s heritage and cultural sites thrive. We hope Istana Budaya will return to its former glory once all the renovation and maintenance work is complete.
