For those living or working in the Klang Valley, specifically in Kuala Lumpur, we are blessed with many options for public transportation to help us get to our destination. Having said that, out of all these options, why do many consider the KL Monorail to be the worst?

In a tweet by Amirul Ruslan, the Malaysian lamented the KL Monorail system, saying, “KL Monorail (is) doing everything possible to be the least beloved of public transport lines in Malaysia.” The Twitter user also included an image taken at one of the monorail stations, focusing on the 12-minute waiting time for the next train.

For your information, the KL Monorail Line is one of the operation monorail systems in Malaysia operated by RapidKL and is also one of the components of the Klang Valley Integrated Transit System. It was introduced in 2003 and is widely considered one of the most unsatisfactory rail lines in the Klang Valley due to improper infrastructure planning and low frequency of coaches. On average, the frequency for the KL Monorail line is every 7 minutes for weekday peak hours, with the time reaching up to 15 minutes during non-peak hours.

Amirul’s tweet had many agreeing with him, sharing their discontent with the public transport system. Many were equally disappointed at the low frequency of trains, plus other issues like poorly maintained stations and ill-designed coaches. Others lamented that the KL Monorail needs a complete overhaul, focusing on its station and the rolling stock.

However, a few monorail riders did say the KL Monorail is an underrated option for public transportation in the Kuala Lumpur area. Some said the monorail should be considered a “go slow and enjoy” kind of transport, meant more for those who want a better view of the KL cityscape.

There is always room for improvement – and judging from these comments, it seems that the KL Monorail needs a lot of improvement if it wants to keep up with the other rail systems in the Klang Valley.
