Malaysian singer-rapper Mimifly has done it again! The superstar recently dropped her latest single, “Temberang”, earlier this week, and fans are absolutely loving it. True to her signature style, the new dance track incorporates traditional elements in both its instrumentals and music video, which has already garnered over 100,000 views at the time of writing.
We had the opportunity to speak with Mimifly about the inspiration behind the song, some behind-the-scenes moments from the music video shoot, and what fans can look forward to from her upcoming projects. Here’s what she had to say:

1. First of all, congratulations on the new song! What was the inspiration behind “Temberang”? Did a particular experience prompt you to create this song?
Thank you so much! So, “Temberang” was inspired by the empty promises made by people in your life, the ways they try to manipulate you, use you, and the hurt and disappointment that follow. It draws partly on my own experiences as well as stories I’ve heard and read on social media, and that’s where the idea came from.
2. The music video looked incredibly majestic. Where was it filmed, and how long did the entire shoot take to complete?
The official music video took us two days to complete. As for the filming locations, I’d like to keep that a secret [laughs]. I’m sure some people will recognise the area, so if you know, you know. We filmed one location on the first day and the other location the following day.
3. Filming outdoors, especially in the forest, always comes with challenges, as there’s little control over the weather and other external factors. What was the most challenging part of shooting the music video?
Alhamdulillah, the weather was on our side during the filming days. We didn’t face many challenges at the locations themselves, but I would say that the most difficult part was the preparations. It was the same team I worked with on “Angkat” and “Sahabat”, and they are amazing, talented people. However, all of us are incredibly busy, so finding dates when everyone was available was definitely a challenge.
Two days is a lot to ask, but thankfully, we made it work because everyone was just as passionate as I was about making this project a reality. There were a few miscommunications here and there, but I feel very blessed to have this team. Everything turned out amazing.

4. As always, you’ve incorporated sign language into the choreography. We’re curious to know, have you been working with the same interpreter for every project?
Yes, it’s the same interpreter. I call him Teacher Amril, and he’s on speed dial, so whenever I need him for a project, I can always reach out. I’m so grateful to have him involved in these projects. That said, as much as I enjoy incorporating sign language into the choreography, for “Temberang”, it isn’t the main highlight.
Since it’s a dance track, I wanted the primary focus to be on the performance aspect. While including sign language is always fun, “Temberang” is very much a performance-driven song, where the choreography takes centre stage.
5. How has learning sign language been for you? Could you share some insights into your lessons and how much your skills have improved?
I’m still very much a beginner. It’s one thing to sign to others, but it’s another to truly understand it. I believe this applies to every language: you can memorise phrases and sentences, but receiving and processing the information is always a challenge. Unfortunately, due to my busy schedule, I don’t have the luxury of taking proper classes and practising consistently, but I do pick up a few things from private lessons with my teacher whenever I can, especially while working on a project. I hope to continue improving.
6. So far, apart from “Sahabat” from the Mencari Ramlee OST, every single you’ve released since “Angkat” has been upbeat, catchy, and high energy. Can fans expect a ballad from Mimifly for your next single?
I do have a few songs in the bank, but it’s not the right time to release them yet. Maybe one day, insyaAllah. My current vision and goal are to create music that explores the connection between humans and nature, while also drawing on Malay poetry and other literary works. That’s the direction I’m taking at the moment. I also want to maintain the momentum of releasing powerful, high-energy tracks that are designed for live performances.

7. Speaking of your previous singles, you’ve consistently incorporated traditional elements into your projects, from the instrumentals and visuals to the costumes, choreography, and filming locations. Could you tell us more about what draws you to these cultural influences?
I believe we are entering a new era. With advanced technology and the internet, there is so much for us to learn and explore about people from other countries; their stories, cultures, and histories. All this information is now at our fingertips; it is easily accessible, and often we come across it while scrolling through social media.
I find this extremely inspiring. As an artist, I want to showcase the beauty of our country to the rest of the world through my music. This is why I am drawn to these cultural influences, which have now become a signature element of my style. I want to show everyone that we are progressive and modern, yet still very Malaysian. This is our culture, and I want to present it with class, elegance, and style. While you shouldn’t be defined solely by where you come from, I do want to be recognised as a Malaysian artist, as it remains a core part of my identity — and it is a strong foundation if you are planning to reach a global audience.
8. What’s next for Mimifly? What can you share with us that fans can look forward to from you in the near future?
Right now, I want to focus on taking care of my team and giving my absolute best in everything I do, while also taking things one step at a time. Mental health is incredibly important, especially as an artist in the entertainment industry, where you can often be an easy target for hateful comments. Overall, I just want to continue being authentically myself and to feel proud of who I am and what I do.
As for the fans, insyaAllah, there will be more music coming your way — you can definitely expect that. I’m always working on my craft and honing my skills, and I plan to keep doing this for as long as I can.
