Interview: Henry Ting On TTRacing’s Origin Story, Challenges, Its Future

by Justin
December 21, 2024

TTRacing almost didn’t make it. A year into his business, with all of his RM400,000 earnings invested in this, things were looking bleak for CEO Henry Ting. “I remember the specific night that I thought about giving up. It’s easy to throw in the towel, but I thought that if I lacked it all in at that moment, then what would I be? I’m not the kind to give up easily,” Henry told AugustMan.

After persevering for 2 years, the first TTRacing Swift X gaming chair struck gold when it launched in 2019. The pandemic accelerated the business when everyone was forced to remain at home. Henry saw this as an opportunity to appeal to gaming enthusiasts and professionals while offering comfortable and ergonomic seating solutions designed to optimize posture, well-being, and overall comfort.

We spoke to the brainchild of TTRacing on the brand’s origin story, how it stands out from its competitors in the market and Henry’s personal design so far.

How did the name TTRacing and concept first came to you?

The name TTRacing was inspired by the excitement and thrill associated with racing—speed, precision, and performance. When I first envisioned the concept, I wanted to create products that embodied these qualities while delivering exceptional comfort and functionality, especially for gaming enthusiasts who spend long hours seated.

What was the biggest challenge in kicking off this business?

The biggest challenge was breaking into a market dominated by established brands. We were competing on price, quality, and trust—convincing customers that TTRacing was not just an affordable alternative but a superior option in terms of durability and design was an uphill battle. Logistics and scaling operations across markets also posed significant challenges early on.

You encountered a personal low a year into your business. Was there someone or a specific moment that helped you persevere?

Yes, I hit a rough patch when I questioned whether I had made the right decision to pursue this business. A conversation with my inner self reminded me that challenges are part of every successful story, reignited my motivation.

What inspired the design of the very first TTRacing chair?

The first design was inspired by the idea of merging style with functionality. We looked at car racing seats for their ergonomic design and support, adapting those elements into a gaming chair format. It was crucial for our chair to be aesthetically appealing yet provide comfort and support for long hours of gaming or work. Of course that was the first version and needed improvement and we got feedback from the community.

TTRacing Swift X gaming chair struck gold when it was launched in 2019. Why do you think it was such a huge hit with Malaysian gamers?

The Swift X was a game-changer because it combined high-quality materials, sleek design, and affordability, which resonated deeply with gamers. Additionally, it is also minimalist and professional that we sort of want to bring this chair to a bigger mass market outside of gamers, which has really worked for us. Showing that we can grow beyond the gamer community.

What sets TTRacing apart from its competitors?

TTRacing differentiates itself by offering premium products at a competitive price point. Our emphasis on product innovation, thoughtful design, and customer feedback ensures we consistently deliver value. We also prioritize building a strong connection with our audience, whether through collaborations or community initiatives, creating a loyal customer base.

TTRacing develops quality ergonomic chairs and desks. What key features do you think are essential for an ergonomic product?

Key ergonomic features include lumbar support, adjustable height and recline, armrests with full adjustability, and a seat base designed to distribute weight evenly. For desks, height adjustability and sturdy construction are essential. These features ensure comfort, reduce fatigue, and promote proper posture, making long hours of use more manageable.

What key features do you think are essential for gaming chairs?

Gaming chairs should focus on lumbar and neck support, breathable materials, and the ability to recline and tilt-lock for flexibility. A strong frame and padding that balances firmness with comfort are also crucial. Most importantly, the chair must cater to the long hours gamers spend seated without compromising on comfort or style.

What emerging trends or technologies are you keen on in the gaming chair market?

I’m particularly interested in incorporating smart technology, such as chairs with integrated health monitoring or adaptive support. Sustainability is another trend I find promising—using eco-friendly materials without compromising on quality. Additionally, we’re exploring modular designs that allow users to customize features to their needs.

The brand has also collaborated with many popular franchises (One Piece, Star Wars, Marvel) and iconic characters (Spider-Man, Venom, Deadpool, Wolverine). Can you talk about how these collabs come about?

These collaborations stem from our commitment to merging function with fandom. We actively seek partnerships with franchises that resonate with our audience, creating products that not only perform well but also connect emotionally. The process involves identifying mutual values and designing chairs that honor the essence of these beloved characters.

Do you have a personal favourite and why?

My personal favorite is the Marvel collection, especially the Spider-Man chair. It symbolizes resilience, creativity, and adaptability—all qualities I admire. The design strikes a perfect balance between being bold and practical, making it both a statement piece and an ergonomic tool.

Can you tease for future product collaborations?

We’re working on some exciting new collaborations that will tap into both nostalgia and cutting-edge trends. While I can’t reveal too much, fans of iconic video game franchises and groundbreaking series will definitely be thrilled.

What has been your favourite part of creating and running this business so far?

My favorite part has been seeing how TTRacing has grown from an idea into a multi-hundred-million-dollar brand that impacts lives globally. Hearing customers share how our products have improved their gaming or work setups is incredibly rewarding. I also love working with a passionate team that shares the same vision for innovation and excellence.
