“Interior Chinatown” Review: A Detective Series With A Comedic Action Twist!

It has become a common stereotype for main characters in movies and TV shows to embody traits of a loser or a failure. Directors often lean into this trope to make protagonists more relatable to audiences. After all, everyone dreams of being the main character, even if they sometimes feel more like a side character in their own story—or perhaps in a criminal TV show.

This new Disney+ Hotstar series explores the journey of an insecure Chinese man trying to rise above the cards life has dealt him. When someone spends most of their life believing they are insignificant, it’s only natural to develop low self-esteem and a desire to be part of something bigger, grander, and more meaningful. This show might tug at your heartstrings or introduce you to new emotions.

The series is adapted from “Interior Chinatown,” a novel by American author Charles Yu, which won the National Book Award in 2020. Known for his exceptional storytelling in science fiction and experimental fiction, Yu delivers a narrative rich in complexity and emotion. If you haven’t read the book, we recommend watching the series first. Readers often have high expectations, and adaptations don’t always live up to the original material. As an avid reader, we can understand the disappointment that comes with unmet expectations.

What makes this series especially compelling is the lead performance by Jimmy O. Yang, a Hong Kong-American actor and stand-up comedian. Best known for his role as Dr. Chang Kaifang in “Silicon Valley,” Jimmy does an excellent job portraying the main character’s complex insecurities. His ability to bring such depth and authenticity to the role is a testament to his talent and understanding of the character’s struggles.

Adding to the show’s charm is Johor-born actor Ronny Chieng, who steals the spotlight as the protagonist’s sassy best friend. His impeccable comedic timing and sharp delivery bring much-needed levity to the series. Meanwhile, Chloe Bennet plays a detective who assists the main character in navigating his challenges. The on-screen chemistry between Jimmy and Chloe is simply chef’s kiss, perfectly capturing the progression from strangers to friends and eventually, the blossoming of a subtle romance.

The series captivates viewers with its intriguing mysteries and unexpected plot twists. Events from earlier episodes connect seamlessly to later revelations, keeping you engaged throughout. The cinematography is another highlight, with creative colour grading that distinguishes the protagonist’s perspective from the audience’s viewpoint. This approach evokes the feel of classic detective shows, adding an extra layer of visual storytelling.

However, the show has its shortcomings. The sudden, illogical events at the start might confuse viewers, as the series does little to clarify whether the world depicted is grounded in reality or it veers into fantasy. For instance, a character recording their every move adds a surreal element that feels unexplained. While the show is marketed as an action comedy, its tone leans more towards action comedy-fantasy. Establishing this blend more clearly from the outset—perhaps through fantastical settings—could have avoided this confusion.

Despite this, the series’ pacing is a strength. Episodes run for about 40 minutes or more, striking a perfect balance between detail and momentum. This ensures the story doesn’t feel rushed and that crucial moments from the novel are given the attention they deserve. Viewers can savour the plot without worrying about abrupt endings, making it a satisfying watch.

For fans of detective series, “Interior Chinatown” is a must-watch. The stellar acting, sharp writing, and high-quality cinematography make this series stand out. Its compelling narrative and meticulous detective work will hook you from the very first episode. Whether you’re drawn in by the humour, the mystery, or the emotional depth, this show has something for everyone.

With its outstanding storytelling and memorable performances, “Interior Chinatown” has the potential to become one of the most talked-about series on Disney+ Hotstar. We can only hope for more seasons to continue exploring the fascinating world it has built.
