Tom Hanks returns to war zone!
DreamWorks studios have announced a new Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks‘ upcoming Cold War thriller, titled “Bridge of Spies”. The film is notable in that it is one of the rare Spielberg projects that will not include a score composed by John Williams, whose melodies have long been a staple of the director’s work. “Bridge of Spies” will however see Thomas Newman (of “Mr. Banks” and “The Help” fame) handle music duties.
It was reported that Williams was unable to work on the film due to what DreamWorks describes as “a minor health issue” that the company reports has been taken care off. Williams has scored 26 of Spielberg’s 27 films and is said to reunite with the director on his upcoming family film, “The BFG”.
Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies” is based on the real-life swap of spy Rudolf Abel with captured American U-2 pilot Francis Powers in 1962. The synopsis is as follows:
A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, “Bridge of Spies” tells the story of James Donovan (played by Tom Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the centre of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot.
The screenplay of “Bridge of Spies” was written by Ethan and Joel Coen based on an original script by Matt Charman. “Bridge of Spies” comes 17 years after Spielberg won a directing Oscar for the WWII drama “Saving Private Ryan,” which starred Hanks.
Fox 2000 Pictures co-financed the film with DreamWorks in association with Participant Media and will distribute internationally while Disney handles domestic distribution. The movie will also star Mark Rylance, Scott Shepherd, Amy Ryan and Alan Alda.
