How To Choose A Blush Shade, According To 3 Celebrity Makeup Artists!

Blush definitely isn’t going anywhere!

Realizing Beauty/Jane Iredale

From pigmented liquid blushes that brilliantly brighten the under eyes, to creamy blushes that are packed with skin-loving elements, the serious blush craze has spurred so much innovation, with formulations and also with application techniques, and helped enliven everyone’s complexion. While purple blush undoubtedly had its hype recently, vibrant pink tones are unquestionably reigning supreme. Plus, current trends are still moving towards a more natural hue.

So, you’re looking for some assistance in selecting the right blush shade? We’ve got the inside scoop on blushes from some of the greatest makeup artists (MUAs) in the business, namely Patrick Ta, founder of Patrick Ta Beauty and celeb-favourite MUA known for working with the likes of Gigi Hadid and Camila Cabello; Melissa Murdick, Selena Gomez’s right-hand MUA and Lora Arellano, the founder of Melt Cosmetics and an artist who has worked with Rihanna and Christina Aguilera, who all gave their insight into choosing the right shade of blush to complement your overall look.

Pink Blush

The most common shade we all reach out for and when in doubt, pink blush is just the thing you need for a completed look.

For this tone of blush, Lora gives a guide. While she thinks anyone can find a pink that works for their skin tone, you can choose the right base for your skin tone. A pale true pink tone with a cool blue base best suits fair skin tones. For medium skin tones, a pink blush with a peachy base will look the most flattering.

As for Melissa, matching the style you are creating is important when deciding between pink and peach as your go-to blush tone. On the other hand, she prefers to pick her blush hue so that it combines well with her lip colour or the overall makeup look. You can always choose a blush that matches your skin’s undertone. Giving oneself options and seeing the big picture are both beneficial.

Red Blush

Another common tone of blush!

The POWER of a RED blush 💪🏼 When clients ask for that “sun-kissed” effect, this is my go-to! ☺️ It’s from Nars and it’s in the shade “Exhibit A.” I like to apply it AFTER setting powder and BEFORE highlighter. And when brushed along the chest and shoulders… DIVINE! 🤌🏼 #redblush #makeup #blush #paintedbyspencer

Red blush may be really beautiful and ethereal depending on how vibrant or sheer the formula is. Lora explains that she prefers cheeks with red or terracotta undertones on darker complexion tones because they create the ideal warm flush. For individuals with fairer skin tones, she advises applying lightly for a more natural appearance. Additionally, a sheerer cream mixture or a light sprinkle of red powder will have a similarly understated effect.

Purple Blush

Purple is without a doubt the underdog when it comes to blush colours, and Arellano provides some tips for selecting the precise shade of purple (and formula type) that would probably work best for you. Purple blush, in her opinion, looks particularly attractive on darker complexion tones. Lighter shades of purple (like lavender) look best on fair and medium skin tones, and sheen-finish items best match these tones.

Peach Blush

Peachy tones are a safe bet that go well with everyone when it comes to picking the best blush colour. Furthermore, natural peach hues can be used to create a delicate contour. Patrick Ta said he loves applying peach blush to his apple cheeks and blending them upward and outwards. He also stated that this kind of blush application gives the face a more sculpted look. As for Melissa, peach blush is a more subtle shade and a bit more ‘goof proof’ than the brighter options out there, because you’re less likely to look clown-y in the end. Lora, on the other hand, said peach blushes add a healthy flush with minimal to no effort.
