Hong Kong star Maria Cordero (玛俐亚) is a familiar face to Malaysians, having visited us many times. However, she recently spoke about an old experience, revealing a shocking incident when she visited another Southeast Asian country.
The television personality, more fondly known as Fei Ma (肥妈), was recently interviewed by news outlets at an event in Hong Kong. During the interview, a reporter brought up the recent case of Chinese actor Wang Xing, hoping to get Maria’s opinion on the matter. The 70-year-old said the news terrified her, and she doesn’t dare to travel to Thailand anymore, even asking her family to avoid visiting the Southeast Asian country.
Reporters also asked if Maria has ever experienced anything scary while abroad for work, given her illustrious career. Shockingly, the star recounted an incident that involved actor Simon Yam (任达华). According to Maria, she and the actor once went to a nightclub in Indonesia more than ten years ago. Simon is known to charm female fans while performing, so he gave flowers to a woman in the audience as part of his performance.
However, the situation took a shocking turn when the man next to the girl suddenly took out a gun and pointed it at Simon. The man then demanded the star to finish a bottle of brandy while holding him at gunpoint. Maria said she rushed to help Simon drink the liquor, noting that she could handle her alcohol better. Thankfully, the man calmed down after having a drink with the singer. However, Maria recalled feeling very threatened at the time.
It’s worth noting that Maria rarely performs in Indonesia, but it’s unknown if the incident played a part. However, the singer remains active in Malaysia and often returns for work. She was in town last November for her joint concert with Frances Yip and Elisa Chan. Maria will also return to Malaysia next week for her solo concert on 21st January 2025 (Tuesday) at the Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting.
We’re glad Maria’s quick thinking was able to get her and Simon out of that scary situation. We wonder what other shocking experiences the singer has had in her decades-long career.
