Celebrities are often at the forefront of fashion – and many of their fans look to them for style inspiration and to know what’s in trend. However, that’s not to say that all celebrities get praised for their fashion sense – like Hong Kong singer-songwriter Gareth Tong (湯令山), who recently got mixed reactions for his eccentric style.
The singer, also known by his stage name Gareth.T, is one of Hong Kong’s most popular singers who has caught the attention of numerous Hong Kong artists, including Joey Yung, Wyman Wong and Tyson Yoshi. He has also built a reputable following online with his social media postings. However, many netizens have also taken notice of his fashion sense, which they say is rather peculiar.

Gareth recently appeared at the CHILL CLUB Chart Awards 2024 to accept an award for his music. However, the vocalist appeared on stage in a white tank top, backpack and dark sunglasses. Based on a photo he shared, the tank top was from Prada – but that didn’t do much to impress netizens. Many had commented that the star dressed too casually for the event and questioned the purpose of the backpack.
Gareth was also recently spotted in a fan’s social media post, which also garnered netizens’ attention. In the photo shared by the fan, the 25-year-old was wearing a yellow plaid shirt with denim shorts. As for accessories, he opted for a black cap, long socks with leather loafers and a backpack. Netizens were tickled by the look, saying Gareth looked like he was cosplaying Suneo from the Japanese comic franchise Doraemon. Others poked fun at the backpack, joking that it must contain something important because he’s always bringing it around.
Despite the comments about his clothing choice, Gareth remains unbothered and continues to be unapologetic with how he dresses. He also collaborated with many fashion houses, including Prada and Louis Vuitton, proving that his style is recognised by big names in the industry. Fans also enjoy his stylistic choices, saying it’s uniquely him.
