#Grab: Ride-Hailing Service Ups Safety Efforts With In-Car CCTV Camera

Vehicle accidents are one of the most regular casualties especially when you’re driving in the city. There are just too many irresponsible drivers on the road.

In trying to curb the growing concern on road safety, Grab is upping the ante by introducing 2 safety features: the in-car CCTV cameras in GrabCars in Malaysia as well as the introduction of its new insurance policy in Southeast Asia. The policy is reportedly the largest in terms of coverage.

In launching Grab’s pilot programme, the in-car CCTV cameras will be installed in vehicles driven by female drivers as an added protection for both drivers and passengers. This move will also help solve potential disputes between drivers and passengers. The first round of women drivers were chosen based on their active performance and ratings from passengers.

“The CCTV cameras which are installed progressively in 100 selected cars is aimed to ensure on-the-job safety for our female drivers and also in the event of any disputes by either driver or passenger. To-date, we have not received any negative feedback from either drivers and passengers, in fact drivers laud the initiative as it makes them feel safer on the road,” said Jaygan Fu, Country Manager of Grab Malaysia.

Also applicable for all GrabCar passengers and drivers is the new PAI (personal accident insurance), which is free to either party. The policy coverage includes accidental death, permanent dismemberment and bodily injuries in the event of road accidents for drivers and passengers.

The amount insured is up to RM64,200 per person in Malaysia and varies across the other 6 countries that Grab operates in as each incident will be evaluated individually by the insurance providers. These steps are in addition to Grab’s current safety features which includes stringent background screening and the PDRM button which connects drivers to the nearest police station.
