Unfortunately, many people are prone to oversharing on social media – which can lead to terrible consequences. That was what happened to this government employee who overshared about her job. Twitter user Izwan Izzat recently shared a screenshot of a TikTok video from the employee, with the captions, “How do you get a government office position? Here’s how.”

The now-deleted video showed the employee, Nana, bragging about having fun in a karaoke room on a Friday because she has a 3-hour lunch break. Of course, the long lunch break piqued netizen’s interest, who were curious about Nana’s job. While she never directly mentioned her position or employer, the TikTok user replied that she works in a government office in IOI City Tower Two. Nana also added she would often visit the nearby IOI City Mall during her break. However, when asked how she got her job, Nana mistakenly admitted to getting her government job through connections or “cable”.

Her nonchalant responses led to an outpour of criticism from netizens. Many netizens slammed her for incompetence because she skipped work to hang out at a nearby mall. Many said her attitude towards her job is why Malaysians complain about government offices and employees. Her “cable” remark also rubbed people the wrong way as it’s generally looked down upon to get a job using connections. Netizens have deduced that Nana works in the Department of Statistics (DOSM) under the Malaysia Short-Term Employment Programme (MySTEP) initiative. Nana also mentioned in another reply that her mother works in the same department.

However, some noted that Nana wouldn’t have been in trouble if she did not overshare on social media. Many said that government employees skipping work on Fridays isn’t uncommon, but most employees know not to admit it openly. Others also said she should’ve known to be more discreet about how she got her job instead of publicly admitting to using connections.

The Department of Statistics have yet to comment on the matter, but some say the office is aware of the issue. While we don’t condone her actions, let’s use Nana’s case to be more careful about what we share on social media.
