The latest chapter in Malaysia’s long-running giant panda conservation partnership with China began last night, as a new pair of pandas, Chen Xing and Xiao Yue, touched down at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Their arrival marks a significant moment for conservationists and the public alike, reigniting excitement after the departure of the previous panda pair earlier this year.
The duo’s journey from China was carefully coordinated, with the pandas departing Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport at 3:45pm on a specially arranged flight. After an estimated four hours and fifteen minutes in the air, the aircraft landed at KLIA at 8:30pm, where a dedicated team awaited their transfer to a secure facility.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), Chen Xing and Xiao Yue will be transported directly to the Giant Panda Conservation Centre at Zoo Negara. The centre has undergone a full upgrade to provide a highly conducive, safe and modern environment for the new arrivals, ensuring that both pandas can acclimatise comfortably to their new home.
Upon arrival, the pair will undergo a mandatory one-month quarantine period under the close care of an experienced team of veterinarians and keepers. This measure is standard practice to safeguard the pandas’ health and to ensure they adapt well before being introduced to the public. Only after this quarantine will Malaysians get their first glimpse of the new residents.

In its statement, NRES highlighted that the arrival of Chen Xing and Xiao Yue symbolises “the integrity and enduring friendship between Malaysia and China”. The ministry added that Malaysia is continuing its International Giant Panda Conservation Cooperation Project with China through a newly signed agreement on 16th April, in conjunction with the Chinese President’s state visit to Malaysia. This agreement allows Malaysia to host the new panda pair for a period of ten years, from 2025 to 2035.
Malaysia’s previous collaboration under the same programme saw the arrival of Fu Wa and Feng Yi in 2012, who became beloved icons at Zoo Negara. After more than a decade in Malaysia, they were returned to China on 18th May 2025, marking the end of their conservation tenure and paving the way for the arrival of the new, younger pair.

Chen Xing, the male panda born on 19th August 2020, is known for his lively and energetic nature. He is particularly fond of climbing and playing in water, traits that often make for endearing public displays. Xiao Yue, born on 29th September 2020, has a gentler and more composed personality. Slightly rounder and notably fond of food, she is expected to charm visitors with her calm yet expressive demeanour.
With their arrival, anticipation is already building for their eventual public debut. For now, all eyes remain on their successful acclimatisation, as Malaysia welcomes a new era of panda conservation and renewed ties with China through this enduring international partnership.
