After a lacklustre cinematic debut in “Spider-Man 3” (the 2007 version), the villainous character from the Spider-Man universe is finally getting a second chance on the big screen.
Thanks to the recent Brazil Comic-Con, we finally have some new details about the solo “Venom” movie and a footage from director Ruben Fleischer. That’s not all, we’ve also got our first glimpse at Tom Hardy as the titular character in a newly-released movie still.
1. Tom Hardy in “Venom” but not as Venom
Although it’s not the first look at the Symbiote itself, it is technically Tom Hardy in “Venom”. It’s just him as a washed up tabloid reporter Eddie Brock. But c’mon Sony, people want monsters. Give us Venom in all its toothed and midnight glory!
2. What is on Eddie Brock’s notebook?
According to CBR writer Kevin Melrose, the 3 questions written on Brock’s notebook when you zoom in are:
- So, how exactly does the Life Foundation go about testing its pharmaceuticals?
- What about the allegations your empire is built on?
- That you recruit the most vulnerable of us to volunteer for the tests that end up […] them?
While the second question doesn’t really say much, the other two questions pretty much confirms that “Venom” is (at least partially) based on the 1993 comic book series “Venom: Lethal Protector”.
3. The director also confirms that the film is based on 2 comic book story-lines
In the footage that was screened for the crowd gathered at Brazil’s Comic-Con Experience (CCXP), Fleischer revealed, “We want to be as true as possible to the comic with our film. But our story is primarily based on the ‘Lethal Protector’ and the ‘Planet of the Symbiotes’ books“.
4. What are “Lethal Protector” and the “Planet of the Symbiotes” about?
“Lethal Protector” was a 1993 six-issue miniseries centring on five years after Eddie Brock turned into Venom. After years of being on opposing sides, Venom and Spider-Man agree to leave each other alone on the condition that Venom stops his criminal lifestyle. Given that the Web-Slinger isn’t expected to appear, perhaps the storyline will focus on the villain using his new powers for good. “Planet of the Symbiotes” was a 1995 five-issue miniseries that featured Carnage, who is reportedly the main antagonist in “Venom”.
5. The first banner for “Venom”
During the Brazil Comic-Con, organisers used a gigantic black tarp to cover the audiences in a Symbiote-style – that was a pretty nice touch wasn’t it? Those in attendance could also be heard chanting, “We Are #Venom”.
6. Enjoy the new footage from the “Venom” set
UPDATE (9th Febraury):
After months of secrecy, Sony has finally dropped the first trailer for “Venom”.
The clip doesn’t really delve into the plot details (it’s only a teaser trailer after all), but we do see Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock pondering on some deep life questions. There’s even a brief glimpse of the horrific transformation that turns the titular character into a lethal weapon.
