“Avatar: The Last Airbender” remains one of Nickelodeon’s finest animated series of all time. Its storytelling, world-building, artwork, and voice acting performances were exceptional, with countless hidden layers, messages, and Easter eggs still being discovered today. The series is a testament to how successful and iconic a show can become when built on well-researched material and the passion of its creators.
The Netflix live-action adaptation may not have been flawless, but it still received largely positive reviews for staying true to the source material. It is clear that fans cannot get enough of this franchise. However, when news of an animated film in the works was announced, initial excitement quickly gave way to disappointment. Here’s why:

Back in 2021, a new animated film titled “Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender” was announced alongside the formation of Avatar Studios. The story will serve as a sequel, taking place after the events of the main series but before the story of “Legend of Korra”. The original cast members will not be involved in the upcoming project, in consideration of the characters’ ethnic and racial backgrounds.
The upcoming film was originally scheduled for a theatrical release on 9th October 2026, but it has now been confirmed that it will premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ instead. The reasons for this decision remain unclear, though it is suspected that it may be related to Paramount also releasing a new Avatar series, “Avatar: Seven Haven”, as well as adding “Legend of Korra” to its streaming platform. Regardless, fans were unhappy with the decision.

Many criticised Paramount for going back on their promise to release 30 films in cinemas, while others sympathised with the creatives behind the film, who will no longer see their work on the big screen. Numerous fans have called for the film to still be released in cinemas, firmly believing that the impact of the original series should not be underestimated. Some fans also pointed out that, given the success of animated films such as “K-pop Demon Hunters” and “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle”, a theatrical release would have been a wise decision.
At the time of writing, Paramount has yet to respond to the backlash. With plenty of time before the release, the studio could still change its mind and stick to the original plan. We’ll find out once the first trailer drops. What are your thoughts on this?
