10 more Electric Railway System (ETS) trains will be added to the current fleet of 38 trains in order to meet with the increasing passenger demands, according to a report by local news site Bernama.

The Ministry of Transport and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) will work hand-in-hand to ensure that the project will run smoothly.

Transport Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, explained that the additions are in line with the rapid development of the transport system services. Also, ETS trains are in high demand as it is the preferred choice of the public when travelling from one state to another.

Liow continued:

Currently, KTMB has 38 ETS trains, and serves the Gemas-Padang Besar route twice a day. Each train has six coaches that can accommodate up to 300 passengers at any one time, and this is still unable to meet the demand.

The public have been complaining to KTMB that it was difficult to get tickets, and they had to book tickets almost a month in advance. After listening to the public’s grievances, KTMB decided to take action.

The project was announced during the opening of the Arau Train Station, in conjunction with the 73rd birthday of the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail yesterday (Thursday, 19th May) afternoon.
