Zendaya has just made history today (Monday, 21st September) by becoming the youngest actress to win an Emmy for lead actress in a drama series.
The 24-year-old actress pulled a major upset by beating fellow nominees Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) as well as Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Olivia Colman (“The Crown”) and Laura Linney (“Ozark”).
The Hollywood beauty was highly praised for her role as teenage drug addict Rue Bennett battling with substance abuse in HBO’s “Euphoria”. In her winning speech, Zendaya thanked her family, team and “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson.
She said:
“I appreciate you so much; you’re my family. I’m so grateful for Rue. I’m so grateful that you trusted me with your story. I know this feels like a really weird time to be celebrating. But I just want to say that there is hope in the young people out there. I know that our TV show doesn’t always feel like a great example of that, but there is hope in the young people. And I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets, I see you, I admire you, I thank you.”
This also happens to be Zendaya’s first Emmy nomination and we couldn’t be happier for her historic moment. It was only last year when Jodie set the category’s age record as the youngest star to ever win the drama actress prize at 26.
