There has been tragic news from the Malaysian animation industry. Recently, news emerged that Andi Abdul Ghani, the animation director for the popular animated series “Ejen Ali”, had drowned in a river in Kinabatangan, Sabah.
According to reports, the 41-year-old, whose real name was Andi Abdul Ghani Kadir, went missing on 23rd September after he and his wife were involved in an accident on their way from Tawau to Kota Kinabalu. The couple were in the car driven by Andi’s wife when the vehicle went out of control on the Kampung Batu Putih Bridge. Right as the car crashed onto the roadside, Andi jumped out of the vehicle and fell into the river.

The Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call shortly after the accident and was swiftly dispatched to the scene. The search operations continued into the following day when Andi’s body was discovered. Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station chief, Hairi Otuh, told reporters on 24th September 2025 (Wednesday) that the rescue team found the animator’s body at the riverbank near where he disappeared.
Tragically, Andi’s death came just less than two weeks after he and his wife tied the knot. An individual named Yuesran Muhamad Salleh revealed that the couple had just gotten married on 16th September 2025. Yuesran, who helped organise the wedding ceremony, said he was shocked to learn the news of Andi’s passing, especially since it was so early into his marriage.

Meanwhile, fans of the “Ejen Ali” franchise have been sending in their condolences to Andi’s family and the animation team. WAU Animation, the company behind “Ejen Ali”, has also shared the unfortunate news on their official social media accounts. In their post, they also revealed that Andi was one of the Braintrust members at the animation company who helped bring the “Ejen Ali” IP to life.
We also extend our condolences to Andi’s family, loved ones and co-workers at WAU Animation. We hope they can find solace during this difficult time.
