We Malaysians absolutely love discounts, promotions, and good bargains. That is why we have various budget friendly shops: Mr. DIY, Ninso, My 99 Shop, Daiso, as well as Eco-Shop. Not only do we love these shops because of the wide variety of items they sell, but also because of the crazy cheap priced items (e.g.: Eco-Shop’s RM2.10 price tag).

However, the company recently announced that they will be adding an extra 10 cents to their price tags starting 1st December 2021. Which means, in West Malaysia, their items will be priced at RM 2.20 and RM 2.40 in East Malaysia and Langkawi.

The announcement can be found on their Facebook page with the caption, “To our valued customers, we would like to thank you for the support and trust (shown) to us. All this while, we have held on to our principle, which is to offer good quality items at the lowest price. This is what has made eco-shop popular. Due to inflation and still wanting to hold on to the main principle of the company, we have decided with a heavy heart that our items will now be priced at RM 2.20 from RM 2.10 (West Malaysia) / RM 2.40 from RM 2.30 (Langkawi, Sabah & Sarawak) starting from 1st December 2021. We are very regretful to announce this, but we hope you will keep on supporting us.”

This announcement has caused an uproar in the comments section between the customers of Eco-Shop. Different kinds of reactions have been stirred up between the netizens. Some were angry, some were disappointed, while some will still support eco-shop despite the price increase!

Eco-Shop Malaysia Raising Prices By 20 Sen Starting Mid-April; Netizens React

Netizens who understand eco-shop’s situation wrote, “Be grateful you have eco shop.. We don’t have eco (shop) where I live. I have to spend more 🥲 Hello, eco-shop Malaysia, why won’t you open a branch in Sibu, Sarawak (?) #ecoshopMalaysia”. Another said, “10 cents increase.. God willing.. (It’s) still affordable.. Most (shops) out there have already increased (their prices).. Some even hiked up to 80%.. Be grateful that we can still shop at eco (shop)..”.

An annoyed netizen commented on others’ reactions, telling them: “Don’t be so stingy, it’s just 10 cents. You don’t complain when you pay more at other shops.”

Despite the support, there were still netizens dissatisfied with the price increase. One even included an angry sticker with her comment reading, “I knew it. Higher profit, more branches, you increase the price along with it!” While another two netizens stated that they will start boycotting Eco-Shop due to the price increase.

Other comments also include those who gave suggestions for the budget friendly shop and empathises with small businesses; “I hope the delivery charges stay the same“, “If Eco-Shop is affected, small businesses must be too.”

What about you? Will you still support Eco-Shop despite the price increase or will you stop shopping there and opt for cheaper alternatives? We understand that almost everyone is affected by the pandemic, so we don’t blame Eco-Shop for the 10 cents increase.
