Hokkaido, Japan is a must-visit when it transforms into a winter wonderland, offering a variety of enchanting attractions that will excite Malaysian wanderlusters. With direct flights now available, travellers can look forward to an exciting autumn and winter travel experience during the long holiday season later this year.
To help with your itinerary, Japan National Tourism Organisation Kuala Lumpur (JNTO KL) has curated a list information about lesser-known ski areas. From mesmerising winter illuminations to rejuvenating hot springs, Hokkaido promises an unforgettable escape into the beauty of the season.
1. Discover Lesser-Known Ski Areas
For passionate skiers and snowboarders, Hokkaido is famous for its powder snow. Yet, many travelers miss out on the enchanting appeal of lesser-known ski areas like Sapporo Teine and Sahoro Ski Resort. Sapporo Teine, just 40 minutes from Sapporo city, boasts two distinct zones: the Highland Zone, designed for advanced skiers, and the Olympia Zone, ideal for beginners. Additionally, a family park offers fun activities like sledding and tubing. From the summit of the ski courses, you can enjoy breathtaking views of both Sapporo city and the Sea of Japan.
Sahoro Resort Ski Area, located in central Hokkaido, is easily reachable by private transport, just 80 minutes from Obihiro Airport. This ski area is perfect for both advanced skiers and beginners, offering a peaceful environment ideal for those wanting to relax amidst stunning scenery. Both Sahoro and its nearby resorts allow visitors to enjoy Hokkaido’s renowned snow without the hustle and bustle of larger crowds.
2. Bask In The Beauty Of Winter Illumination
Hoshi no Yume Illumination, or “Dream of Stars,” is a stunning light festival held at Goryokaku, one of Hakodate’s most iconic attractions. Recently featured in the animated film “Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram,” this star-shaped fort serves as a key landmark in the heart of the city. From early December to the end of February, Goryokaku is adorned with 2,000 sparkling light bulbs, enchanting visitors with its magical display and creating a fairy-tale ambiance that’s perfect for evening strolls around the fortress.
Another highlight is the Otofuke Tokachigawa Onsen Hakucho Festival “SAIRINKA,” held at Tokachigaoka Park. Here, visitors can admire stunning illuminated ice sculptures while enjoying a traditional onsen (hot spring) experience, all set in a festive atmosphere. Typically running from mid-January to late February, the event showcases hundreds of conical-shaped objects that create a captivating audiovisual spectacle. These illuminations not only enhance the natural beauty of this charming onsen town but also create unforgettable memories for the holiday season.
3. Thrill Seeking With Drift Ice Adventures
Thrill seekers and adrenaline enthusiasts, your adventure awaits! If you’re in the mood for something wild and edgy, Hokkaido has unique experiences like the Drift Ice Cruise. Operating daily from Abashiri, the Ice Breaker “Aurora” takes visitors on a breathtaking journey through the frozen Sea of Okhotsk, showcasing stunning views of the icy landscape. As the cruise progresses, watch as large sheets of drift ice are broken into smaller pieces, creating ever-changing vistas. If you’re lucky, you might even spot Steller’s Sea Eagles and seals along the way. The best time to embark on this unforgettable adventure is in the second half of February.
4. Enjoy Scenic Winter Train Rides
Looking for a “Hogwarts” train experience? While you may not arrive at a magical castle, you’ll be treated to breathtaking sights that showcase nature’s wonders! Hop on the winter sightseeing trains for an unobstructed view of Hokkaido’s stunning beauty, all while relaxing with a cup of hot chocolate. The SL Fuyu-no-Shitsugen Train operates exclusively in January and February, offering passengers a nostalgic ride through the tranquil, snow-covered landscapes of Kushiro Marsh. Lucky travelers might even catch glimpses of red-crowned cranes and Ezo deer from their windows.
The Ryuhyo Monogatari Train is another spectacular sightseeing option operated by JR Hokkaido during the season when the Sea of Okhotsk is blanketed with drift ice. This train offers stunning views of the drifting ice and snowy landscapes as it travels along the coastline. Passengers can enjoy a cozy and warm ride while experiencing the beauty of winter scenery. While it’s not guaranteed that every passenger will see the drift ice due to varying weather conditions each year, you can expect to witness some rare and breathtaking natural scenes along the way.
5. Heal & Unwind By Soaking In The Rejuvenating Waters Of The Onsen
After a day of exploration, nothing compares to the soothing embrace of Hokkaido’s tranquil onsen (hot springs). An essential part of Japanese culture, these calming waters provide a blissful way to connect with nature and oneself, leaving you feeling recharged and rejuvenated. The satisfaction of the onsen experience is especially heightened during the winter season!
Shikaribetsu Kotan, located by Shikaribetsu Lakeside, is a unique winter village made entirely of ice and snow. This village offers an extraordinary onsen experience, allowing guests to soak in natural hot springs surrounded by a snowy landscape. The delightful contrast between the warm onsen water and the crisp winter air will create unforgettable memories of your winter adventure in Hokkaido.
The sight of monkeys in hot springs is one of Japan’s most captivating experiences. The Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden, known for its “Hot-Tubbing Monkeys,” is a nature park in Hakodate that features attractions like a large pyramidal greenhouse, a footbath, and Monkey Mountain. From December to May each year, visitors can watch Japanese macaques (snow monkeys) enjoying the onsen to escape the harsh winter. The adorable sight of these monkeys bathing like humans is sure to delight any traveler eager to capture a unique and rare moment!
