5 Directors Who Could Replace James Gunn For Guardians of the Galaxy 3

Did Disney made the right move in firing James Gunn for his old tweets containing obscene and gross jokes? The jury is still out.

The 51-year-old director was instrumental in shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it today by introducing unknown characters and turned them into one of the biggest franchise under the Marvel umbrella. Assuming that Disney isn’t going back on their decision, here are xxx director that could potentially take on the reigns for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”:

1. Taika Waititi

Taika Waititi is easily the easiest choice and is a popular choice among Marvel fans. He gave “Thor: Ragnarok” a make-over of sorts by injecting humour! Some say that he Guadians’d up the “Thor” franchise with a swirling, swashbuckling laugh fest that the first 2 movies lacked.

In “Avengers: Infinity War”, Marvel also build on the relationship between Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon. Who knows we could have a “Thor 4/Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” combo. Plus, Waititi’s signature humour fits well with Gunn’s comedic undertones.

2. Joe and Anthony Russo

With 2 “Captain America” and 2 “Avengers” blockbusters under their belt, there’s no question that Kevin Feige and the rest of the Marvel team have a lot of faith in the Russo brothers. As it stands, the duo are the only other directors to have directed the cast of “Guardians” in an MCU movie.

3. Brad Bird

Best known for his work in “The Incredibles”, “Incredibles 2”, and most recently, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”, all of Brad Bird’s films involve a team/family dynamic. For example, in the “Incredibles” series we got to see the dysfunctional relationship between a family of superheroes. Meanwhile in “Ghost Protocol”, each of Ethan Hunt’s crew had a pivotal role in their mission.

These are crucial elements that a “Guardians Of The Galaxy” film needs. Besides, it also helps that the filmmaker is already within the Disney family.

4. Nicole Perlman

An argument could be made for Nicole Perlman. Although she doesn’t have any directorial credits to her name, she has been involved in the “Guardians Of The Galaxy” since the beginning. She wrote most of the script for the 1st “Guardians” film herself before Gunn came onboard the project. That’s not all, she also penned the script for next year’s “Captain Marvel” and will be involved in the “Black Widow” movie.

5. Phil Lord and Chris Miller

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are no stranger to comedy, as evident in “21” and “22 Jump Street” and “The Lego Movie”. These funny filmmakers possessed a Guardians-esque wit and know how to churn out a crowd-pleasing blockbuster. However, since Disney previously replaced them with Ron Howard for “Solo: A Star Wars Story”, it’s probably too big of a risk to hire them.

Would “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson make for a better choice? He did, after all, deleted approximately 20,000 of his tweets days after Gunn got fired. We don’t want any more trolls to ruin careers right?

Other honourable mentions:

  • Adam McKay – “Ant-Man” writer and former head writer on “Saturday Night Live”
  • Jon Favreau – “Iron Man” director
  • Edgar Wright – “Baby Driver” director; originally slated to direct “Ant-Man”
  • Matthew Vaughn – directed “Kick-Ass”, “Kingsman: The Secret Service”

Are there anyone else that should be on the list? Sound off your thought in the comments below.
