Many who used the MRT Kajang Line last evening (29th November) might have noticed the MRT stations were a little packed despite the trains not having any technical issues. Well, here was what happened:

According to a tweet by Twitter user @/hyperSyaza, riders aboard a train going from MRT Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) towards Kajang at around 6pm heard a small explosion while on the train. Shortly after the supposed explosion, all passengers had to disembark from the train due to safety concerns. However, the incident caused the Kajang Line to experience a slight delay during the peak evening hours.

Hours after the incident, Rapid KL released a statement to address the alleged explosion that passengers heard. Rapid KL clarified that the explosion was the sound of a spark caused by a train removed from service at the Taman Mutiara station. During the removal of train number ‘28’, it triggered the alarm of the MRT track power supply system at a nearby station. “The incident also produced the ‘spark sound’ that passengers heard. However, there was no explosion or fire”, the company added.

The passengers disembarked the train for safety reasons and boarded the next train that arrived at the Taman Mutiara station. Rapid KL said that the train involved was removed from service and was taken to the depot after operating hours for a detailed inspection. Thankfully, they did not report any issues with the train. The company added that transit officers constantly monitored the situation to ensure no disruption to the train service schedule along the MRT Kajang Line.

We’re glad that nothing serious happened – and it’s a good thing the Rapid KL and MRT teams were quick to react to the incident to ensure the safety of its passengers.
