Regardless of where or what you’re eating, there’s an expectation for the F&B establishment to maintain a certain level of cleanliness and hygiene. Unfortunately, many restaurants and their employees failed to comply with these standards, causing panic among customers.
Recently, a local Indian restaurant chain was slammed after a video showed an employee spitting while packing a customer’s food. Netizens were appalled by the sight and lodged a report with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). Following the reports, DBKL conducted inspections at the restaurant’s two branches to assess food safety and cleanliness, and it shared the results on its Facebook page.

The post identified the restaurant chain as Deen’s in Publika, Mont Kiara. The restaurant also operates a branch in Desa Sri Hartamas as Nasi Kandar Deen Bistro. In its post, DBKL said it fined the Publika restaurant for failing to wear proper head coverings and aprons, thus violating the Food Handlers By-Law 1979. Several employees were also found without the required typhoid vaccination, earning them another fine under the Licensing of Food Establishments By-Law 2016.
Deen Bistro in Desa Sri Hartamas was also issued four fines for similar violations. The violations include failing to wear proper head coverings and aprons, failing to install a grease trap in the kitchen sink, having dirty and greasy kitchen floors, and directly storing flour on the floor. It’s worth mentioning that Deen Bistro had denied that their employees had violated food safety regulations before DBKL’s report.

DBKL concludes its post by reiterating its commitment to ensuring food safety and cleanliness and encouraging the public to report hygiene concerns at food premises. Kudos to DBKL for their response to the situation. Hopefully, no one was affected by the incident – but we urge the public to remain vigilant when dining in a restaurant.
