If you didn’t know, the Apple Store at The Exchange TRX has finally opened its doors to the public! The grand opening event on 22nd June (Saturday) was met with tons of enthusiasm from Malaysians – but it seems the excitement was interrupted by some bad seeds.

The Apple Store at The Exchange TRX is the first Apple Store in Malaysia and only the sixth in Southeast Asia, so the crowd on opening day was expected. The doors to the highly-anticipated store officially opened at 10am that Saturday, with people already camping outside the store as early as the night before so they could be the first in line – and the lucky ones to receive an exclusive gift.

In Malaysia, it’s common practice for stores to offer a free gift to the earliest customers during their grand opening – and the Apple Store was no exception. The tech giant gave out a limited edition tote bag with the words “JOM” printed on the front and “Apple The Exchange TRX” printed on the back to commemorate the special day. The bag was given to the earliest people in the queue on opening day. However, later that same day, netizens noticed that the complimentary item was already getting resold online.

A scroll through an online marketplace shows the free tote bag getting resold for up to thousands of Ringgit. However, it’s worth noting that some sellers may be trolling with their listings and are merely making fun of those who are seriously reselling the totes. Nevertheless, these listings have caught the attention of many netizens, who criticised the sellers for trying to make a profit from a free item. They also urged the public not to buy from these sellers, saying the bag should never be worth such prices.

After looking at the listings, we don’t encourage even the most diehard of Apple fans to purchase these bags. Perhaps Apple can consider making this a permanent item for their The Exchange TRX store.
