Concert Review: 3 Highlights From Aaron Kwok’s Music Performances In Genting

Much has been said about the 8 long years wait for Aaron Kwok (郭富城) to return to our shores. After witnessing the ‘Aaron Kwok Amazing Kode World Tour Live in Malaysia 2023’ in Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting last night (Friday, 23rd June), we can confidently say that the wait was worth it.

This marks his 4th stop on his world tour after his previous pit stops in United States, Canada, and Singapore. His repertoire of songs and dance moves are mostly familiar to those who have been following for the past 3 decades – but man, this Hong Kong superstar is ageless! Clean-shaven and seemingly wrinkle-free, Aaron Kwok delivered a spectacular music party, proving that these past decades hasn’t deterred his energy, nor his drive.

Tugging our heartstrings

As the second-youngest of the Four Heavenly Kings, the 57-year-old entertainer has always been a heartthrob thanks to his dashing good looks. Physical appearance aside, Aaron Kwok is also known for tugging heartstrings as a balladeer. For his Malaysian setlist, the singer showcased plenty of classic ballads, and when fans sang along, it created a peak of romantic ambiance in the venue.

Some of them include “Should I Leave Quietly?” (我是不是該安靜的走開) where he conveyed the feelings of an anguish lover – unsure whether to stay or leave. On “When I Found Out That You Were In Love” (當我知道你們相愛), he expressed the hurt of an unrequited love, while “Who Can Tell Me?” (到底有誰能夠告訴我) saw him reminiscing the good ol’ times with a former flame.

A sizzling music party

There is a reason why people dubbed him the God of Dance. Although he’s dial-down from the crazy headstands and acrobatic balancing moves, this performer can still turn up the heat with his charismatic stage presence. As soon as he exploded on stage with “Wild City” (狂野之城) and “Sing This Song” (唱這歌), we saw him delivering karate-style high-kicks, the iconic hand choreography (“Loving You Endlessly”) and vowing the crowd with his marches and salutes with precision on “Dark Side Temps” (鐵幕誘惑).

We don’t blame the ladies who lost their marbles when Aaron killed his hip-thrusts of “Valid Date” (有效日期), where he rode the microphone stand like a horse. During the concert, he was even lifted unto the shoulders of his backup dancers in precise formation.

Flexing his guns and colourful fashion

Throughout the 2-hour concert, we saw different sides to Aaron Kwok. The chameleon went from guy-next-door to party animal to hunky sex symbol. He also made sure to show off his hard work at the gym by flexing his biceps.

The artist also kept the show exciting with his numerous quick costume changes. He came out in a frilly cowboy ensemble during “Para Para Sakura”, paid tribute to Michael Jackson with the mobster get-up (of white hat, yellow suit and tie), donned a figure-hugging reflective outfit, and for the encore, Aaron appeared on stage in a sporty pink and white baseball uniform when he closed the show with “Dynamite” (動起來) and “Fascinated” (著迷). It was truly vibrant music extravaganza!
