When you’re in a theatre to catch a new movie, you’d expect the typical cinema treats like popcorn and an ice-cold soda – but how do you feel about having a hotpot in the cinema hall?
The term “hotpot cinema” went viral on Weibo recently after cinema-goers in Chengdu, China, shared pictures of them having a hotpot meal while watching “The Expend4bles” on the big screen. On the tables in front of the seats were single-portion pots filled with broth and various hotpot ingredients, including seafood and vegetables.

The unique dining-screening experience garnered a lot of reactions, with many showing interest in checking out the cinema hall. Some have even said that having a hotpot in the cinema is a dream come true for them. However, not everyone is keen on having boiling soup while trying to keep their eye on the big screen. One comment said it ruins the vibe of both the movie and the meal, while another said they prefer to eat the dish in private.
While having a hot meal in the cinema may seem like a novel idea, the cinema offering the unique experience is no stranger to serving a whole dish with a movie. According to Weibo, the “hotpot screening room” is the brainchild of a cinema-restaurant hybrid establishment called Cinker Pictures (三克映画), known for serving steaks and pasta to cinema-goers. Unfortunately for hotpot fans, the screening room won’t be a permanent offering as news outlets report it as a limited-time event.

What do you think about having a hotpot while in a cinema hall? Would you try it or do you prefer to keep them separated?
