It has been almost a week since Malaysia’s 15th General Elections. It was certainly one for the history books as it ended with a Hung Parliament, a first for Malaysia. Unfortunately, the Hung Parliament left many concerned for the country. In fact, their main concern was: who would be the next prime minister?

For the past few days, political leaders have been meeting to discuss and decide who would be elected. It has left Malaysians on tenterhooks as they waited for the final decision. Well, the wait is over. Today (24th November), it was revealed that Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim will be the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Around 1:30pm, the Istana Negara made a formal announcement regarding the news. According to the statement, after much negotiation, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had decided to appoint Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the country’s next Prime Minister.

The statement added that this decision had been made after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had met with the Conference of Rulers. As such, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be sworn in later today at 5pm. The ceremony will be taking place at the Istana Negara.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong reminded political leaders that there were no clear winners or losers. As such, he urged them all to work together for the future of the country. He also requested the members of the Dewan Rakyat to stay united while prioritising commitment and the best service to the people.

Malaysian have been celebrating the decision, with many thanking the Agong. Others were surprised to note how quickly the new PM had changed his Twitter Bio. “The wait was (far too long)!” a netizen responded while laughing.

Others have been offering congratulatory messages to Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim. This includes politician Syed Saddiq. “Congratulations, sir,” the MUDA leader wrote. “Together we will make Malaysia a better place.” CEO of Tony Blair Institute, Jalil Rasheed congratulated Malaysians. “Your vote was not wasted,” he stated.

However, now that one question has been answered, another has risen in its place. Most are now wondering if we’ll get Friday (25th November) off! Well, there hasn’t been any news about that yet, but keep your fingers crossed!
