Sometimes, it’s simply better to think before you speak. Or as it goes nowadays, post. Hong Kong artist Anthony Wong (黄秋生) would certainly agree, especially after a netizen seemingly thoughtlessly picked a fight with him!
Anthony Wong Chau-sang or Anthony William Perry recently got into an argument with a netizen after they left a scathing comment on his post. The netizen supposedly claimed Anthony and several other artists were Hong Kong independence activists. To Anthony’s surprise, however, said netizen was actually from Malaysia!
On 15th April, the Hong Kong film actor and singer uploaded a group photo of several stars on his Facebook. Actors like Chow Yun-fat and Sandra Ng were present, including our very own Michelle Yeoh. While most netizens were delighted to see the gathering of A-list celebs, it seemed some simply had to rain on their parade.
One netizen, in particular, decided to take a pot shot at them. “Can’t go home, (you) Hong Kong independence activists,” he commented. The comment angered Anthony Wong and he was quick to respond. “Unable to return home? I am in Hong Kong, are you (a) Hong Kong independent activist? Do you think Hong Kong is a foreign country?” he asked.
It seems it wasn’t enough for Anthony to simply respond to the comment. He supposedly looked into the netizen’s identity as well, presumably curious about him. “Let’s take a look, the incompetence is really pathetic,” Anthony said. To his surprise, the netizen wasn’t even from China. “I thought you were (from China), but you turned out to be a Malaysian,” Anthony wrote. “What (happens) in China is none of your business.”
The netizen himself has not replied to Anthony Wong’s response. However, many other netizens have sided with Anthony. Several felt the netizen should have kept his unwanted remark to himself. Others claimed they were embarrassed to be from the same country as him. “Uncle, can (you) not disgrace us Malaysians?” one added.
Well, we can’t fault Anthony for his severe reprimand. However, we do hope this netizen and others like him, will think about what they are posting in the future!
