The next time friends from overseas visit Malaysia, perhaps you’d like to introduce rambutan as an alien fruit as seen in “Another Life”.
The new sci-fi series, which recently debuted on Netflix, showed 2 of its characters staring at an “extraterrestrial fruit”. The “alien-looking” fruit is meant to be from an alien moon, but anyone from Malaysia or the Southeast Asian region would instantly recognise it as rambutan.
A Twitter user name Kopi Panas tweeted a short snippet out and the post has since gone viral, garnering around 10k likes and over 12k retweets. Given that the tropical fruit looks hairy, the duo on the show even wondered if the rambutan is poisonous or would have side effects.
This has resulted in a ton of jokes from fellow netizens. Besides being amused that rambutan would be deemed worthy enough to be regarded as an alien fruit, some threw out other suggestions. “What’s next? Durians?” asked Zoella, to which RahMusim Panasdah replied, “Even better, starfruits to make it more extraterrestrial“.

The synopsis for “Another Life” reads:
“The story of an astronaut and a space crew, who are on a mission to investigate the origins of an alien artefact that mysteriously appeared on Earth. As the crew attempt to search for alien intelligence, they face inexplicable horrors that might signal the end of their mission. The series is created by Aaron Martin and stars Katee Sackhoff, Samuel Anderson and Selma Blair, among many others.”
