Beloved Hong Kong star Anita Mui (梅艷芳) passed away over 20 years ago. Still, her family affairs remain the focus of news reports for unsavoury reasons. Recently, Anita’s infamous brother, Peter Mui (梅启明), announced his plans to marry his Thai girlfriend – but it turns out he’s still married to his Malaysian wife, Joey.
According to news reports, Peter will marry his girlfriend May May in a grand wedding banquet. While speaking to Hong Kong news outlets, the public figure also expressed his desire to reconnect with his estranged mother, Tan Mei Kam (梅覃美金), who has cut off ties with him. He even offered a reward for anyone who could contact his mother so she could attend his wedding.

After announcing his new marriage, many reporters grew curious about Peter’s marital status as he was previously married to Joey, a Malaysian woman 16 years his junior. The two even have one child who is now in his mid-teens. In response to questions about Joey, Peter claimed that the two divorced months ago, saying, “I divorced a long time ago. She sought legal aid to handle the procedures.” However, when news outlets contacted Joey, she claimed she and Peter were still married.
The Malaysian said Peter never asked for a divorce, and no legal aid had approached her to discuss the matter. However, Joey revealed her husband’s unfaithfulness, saying, “He (Peter) previously wanted a concubine, which I disagreed with. Now he is remarrying, which is bigamy.” She also revealed that she and her son now live in Malaysia and haven’t contacted Peter in months.

According to Joey, Peter had previously avoided meeting his child when she tried setting up a meeting for them in January. She also alleged that he blocked her phone number after she tried to contact him. As for alimony, Peter reportedly provides a monthly allowance of HK$3,000 (approximately RM1,654) for Joey and their son.
Peter is definitely in a messy situation, but if he plans to marry his girlfriend, we hope he can settle his issues with Joey first. We also wish the best for the Malaysian and her child as they navigate this matter.
