Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau (刘德华) has visited and performed in Malaysia multiple times and fans will never get bored of his presence. Plus, his wife model Carol Chu (朱麗倩) is from Penang so why wouldn’t he visit her home every now and then? Apart from making special appearances and doing concerts in our country, did you know he has also participated in a football match in Melaka? Not only that but he also wasn’t the only Hong Kong star to join the tournament.
Old photos of the iconic “Melaka MCA Charity Football Match For Beautifying Bukit Cina” event recently resurfaced online after some netizens reshared them on their Facebook pages. The match took place on 6th July 1986, 2 or 3 weeks before the general election.
Joining the Hong Kong team were icons Andy Lau, Eric Tsang (曾志伟), Alan Tam (譚詠麟), Michael Miu Kiu-wai (苗僑偉), Danny Lau Dan (劉慶基), Anthony Chan (陳志濤 ), Felix Wong Yat Wah (黃日華), Andrew Lam Man Chung (林敏聰) and Kent Tong Chun-Yip (汤镇业). On the Malaysian team, we had the legendary Datuk Wira Soh Chin Aun (苏进安;), famously known as “Towkay”. It was said that his participation in this particular match was a great addition as he was celebrated for being a Malaysian sports icon.
Fans were excited to see the football star representing his home country against Hong Kong legends as his opponents. If you’re wondering why these famous actors and singers from overseas were invited to join this match, it was because this was the time when Hong Kong’s entertainment industry was at its peak in Malaysia and the charity event was a great opportunity for them to use their star power for a good cause.
