Before one star brings a character to life, many actors and actresses were in the running to play a role. Before Andrew Garfield became Spider-Man, Josh Hutcherson was apparently in the running to be the Marvel superhero.
Josh recently appeared on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast, where he reflected on his career and how being part of the “The Hunger Games” franchise became a huge turning point in his life. The “Five Nights At Freddy’s” actor also revealed that before he became Peeta Mellark, he almost became Peter Parker in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man”.

The actor shared, “A few months before I got cast in “Hunger Games”, I was in the running to be Spider-Man.” Of course, as we now know, the role ultimately went to Andrew Garfield, which understandably disappointed Josh. He said, “I got told ‘no’ which, as a teenager, was heartbreaking because I obviously wanted to be Spider-Man.”
Thankfully, another life-changing role was just around the corner. The actor continued, “But then, I was cast in “The Hunger Games”. That was the craziest turn of events. “Hunger Games” came out of nowhere. It just changed everything.” Josh would play Peeta in four “The Hunger Games” films, becoming part of one of the most successful movie franchises in history.

Given the success of “The Hunger Games”, it’s no surprise that Josh is open to reprising his role as Peeta. In a previous interview, he said, “I would love to be back on set with Francis (Lawrence), with Jen (Jennifer Lawrence), with Liam (Hemsworth), with Woody (Harrelson). It would not take any convincing at all. I’d be there in a heartbeat.”
Sadly, Josh won’t be part of the next instalment of the “The Hunger Games” franchise, “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping”, which releases in November 2026. However, he does have a lot of projects lined up, including two new films and an ongoing HBO series.
