A Rejuvenation Process: Penang Hotels Restart Operations After Long Halt

The pandemic has definitely wreaked havoc in our country. With hotels being shut down to businesses being forced to cease operations, there has been a lot going on in terms of economic progress and it has indeed been on a downfall ever since the pandemic started. This is mostly due to the closing of international and domestic borders within the states and throughout the nation. However, hotels may rejoice now with the increase in vaccination rates. Under Phase 2 of the National Recovery Program (NRP), the states involved could now reopen their doors under strict SOPs of course!

Now, hotels in Penang have started opening up their doors with businesses promoting precautionary measures and attractive staycation packages in a bid to attract customers. Amidst grave concerns of the increasing number of Covid-19 cases, some hotels have instilled additional measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 within the premises.

G Hotel, along the iconic Gurney Drive, has introduced lapel pins indicating staff members who have been vaccinated, to assure the guests staying or dining there that it’s completely safe. Michael Hanratty, the general manager of G Hotel said these pins also symbolised appreciation to those who are vaccinated and front liners. Adding on he said, “It helps to create a sense of assurance and positivity within the community that we are playing our part in the fight against Covid. By letting our staff wear the pin on their uniforms, it will not only tell guests that the staff is safe in terms of contact, but it will also encourage those who have doubts about the vaccination to get vaccinated.”

However, according to communications director, Christina Tan, not all their staff members have been vaccinated yet. Therefore, they are only opened for stay-in but not for dine-in!

Apart from G Hotel, hotels along the strip of Batu Ferringhi, such as Shangri-La Rasa Sayang and Shangri-La Golden Sands are offering a special “Penang Lang” promotion for those who have received their second jab. This promotion enables them to be able to stay at a discounted rate.

The facilities of the hotels such as the golf course and the tennis court at both the hotels are opened to guests on an appointment basis however, this is going to be under strict SOPs. Overnight guests are required to present their digital certificate on the MySejahtera application showing a period of at least 14 days after their second dose or 28 days after being jabbed with a single-dose vaccine.

Nevertheless, it is indeed refreshing to hear some great news amidst the pandemic and trying times as such. Let’s hope that we could receive happier news in the weeks to come.
