Disgraced K-pop star Seungri (승리), infamous for his involvement in the Burning Sun scandal (클럽 버닝썬), continues to grab headlines. From Daesung’s remark about “only three of us now” to his recent portrayal of physical aggression towards a woman in the BBC’s “Burning Sun Documentary,” his name remains a prominent fixture on social media and news platforms. Now, there have been reports suggesting that he’s seeking a “fresh start” by relocating to Hong Kong.
According to ST Headline, Seungri, the former BIGBANG (빅뱅) member who faced imprisonment, has allegedly relocated to Hong Kong, a move leaked by a netizen and purportedly aimed at leveraging the city’s economic advantages. His bad reputation in South Korea has hindered his career restart, but his fame still commands attention in other parts of Asia.
Relocating to Hong Kong is a strategic choice, with notable local figures like Chantale Belle (貝依霖) showing friendliness towards him, even posing together in a picture posted on her Instagram story. Seungri’s decision is likely driven by these factors: Hong Kong’s proximity to China offers profitable opportunities, its efficient transportation, and infrastructure facilitates, business access to mainland China, and its financial freedom allows seamless capital flow.
A netizen posted a screenshot of a chat with a friend, revealing that the Korean celebrity was seen socialising with bosses of alcohol distributors and club owners. Their interactions appeared to be business-related. A netizen leaked a screenshot of a friend saying that the singer is interested in starting a business in eastern Tsim Sha Tsui, possibly venturing into the bar and entertainment industry, as indicated by his recent appearance in Hong Kong’s nightlife scene.
Netizens have expressed their disgust at these rumours, with comments like, “He wasn’t jailed for good. He needs to stay in there for a long, long time. Nightclub, again? That’s wild,” and simply, “Disgusting.” Others argued that his prison time was insufficient to teach him a lesson, criticising the privileged conditions he allegedly received.
As a fallen idol and ex-convict, Seungri appears to have learned little from his prison experience. We hope these rumours remain just that and do not materialise. Do you believe he will genuinely relocate to Hong Kong to launch a new nightclub business, or is this merely speculation from his critics?
