5 Signs You Should Start Seeing A Therapist, PRONTO!

“Seek help” is a term that is frequently used online as an insult or tasteless joke, contributing to the notion that seeing a therapist is something to be ashamed of. However, it’s far from the case, since being vulnerable demonstrates strength – something we all need in order to become a better version of ourselves. Another common misconception about psychological therapy is that you must have experienced something extremely traumatic that totally messed you up, in order to qualify for it, which is completely untrue.

Regardless of why you’re looking for therapy – whether it’s to help deal with the death of a loved one, a broken relationship, a toxic job, or social anxiety, there is no wrong reason to seek help. And you certainly don’t have to be suffering from a mental illness to make an appointment with your local therapist. All of these misconceptions are attributable to a lack of mental health education and awareness in Malaysia, where psychological health issues are still considered a taboo subject.

Embarrassment and lack of awareness are also why many may not know that they actually require the help of a mental health professional. At some period in our lives, we all suffer from stress, worry, and other types of emotional distress. While it’s easy to brush everything under the rug and not confront our emotions, hoping that our problems will go away on their own, most of the time, a therapist is required to provide us the helping hand we need to get us back on track.

So, if you’ve ever wondered whether you’re a prime candidate for therapy, here are five critical signs to look out for:

When Stress Shows Up On Your Skin: It’s Not Just About Your Skincare!

You Tend To Isolate Yourself

It might not be apparent to you, but other people will begin to notice how you distance yourself from gatherings. You would sense a heaviness in your heart after experiencing certain issues or traumatic circumstances, which would clutter your brain. So, you tend to dwell on what’s on your mind rather than focusing on your surroundings, which might impact new and pre-existing relationships.

You’re Not Doing As Well As You Should

If you used to accomplish things at work really well, but are now experiencing a decline after suffering emotional distress, it’s a solid indication that you should visit a therapist. Apathy would begin to creep into your life, causing you to perform poorly at work due to the mental health concerns you’re dealing with. Not seeking mental health support sooner could greatly affect the future of your career, not to mention your life.

You No Longer Find Joy In The Things You Used To Like

Remember those activities and interests you used to love, but no longer do? One of the major consequences of having psychological or emotional troubles is loss of interest in life’s delights. There is a sense of emptiness and a void that cannot be filled by your favorite activities. Therapy may assist you in determining what is weighing you down, eliminating negative ideas and behaviors, and reuniting with what offers you joy.

You Found Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms

Because of psychological or emotional issues, failing to get treatment may take you down a disastrous path. While coping mechanisms can help you manage with triggers, poor coping mechanisms can be detrimental to you. These coping techniques, whether through alcoholism, drugs, or sexual intercourse, can only aggravate your negative thoughts than pacify them. Through therapy, you’ll be able to identify which appropriate coping mechanism will help you through your recovery journey.

You Don’t Take Care Of Your Health

Mental health is just as vital as physical health. Even though we can’t see it, our bodies undoubtedly feel it. You begin to disregard the care of your body and may eat less, which can lead to disastrous health concerns in the long term. Mental health difficulties have a direct influence on our physical health, which is why getting therapy and assistance from a mental health specialist can relieve your anxieties, and prevent impairment of all other health systems.

At the end of the day, the most vital thing to keep in mind is that there is nothing shameful about wanting to get help. It’s essential to note that talking to a therapist is an important step to garnering strength towards self-love.
