These five bands are reshaping the genre, each offering something unique for every listener. Whether you’re a long-time fan or just discovering this musical landscape, you can’t miss out on these incredible artists.


ANGQASA 

ANGQASA is an ambient post-rock project by Malaysian musician and producer Alvin Seah. Renowned for creating cosmic soundscapes infused with Neo Nusantara (Southeast Asian) influences, ANGQASA seamlessly blends ambient, electronic, shoegaze, and drone music to deliver a lush, melancholic, and atmospheric sonic experience. Alvin’s music is often described as therapeutic and calming, characterised by immersive sound design. The latest release from ANGQASA, “The Calm Mgep Storm”, features spacey, reflective compositions that are ideal for quiet moments or as a backdrop to daily life.


Dé Fusion

Dé Fusion is a Malaysian post-metal band active since 2014, known for their unique fusion of ambient and post-rock elements. They debuted with a demo in 2014, followed by their first EP, “Kontramata”, in March 2019, and a collaborative split tape with the band MIM later that year. Their sound reflects the emotional depth typical of post-metal, resonating with fans who appreciate intricate compositions. They also engage in creative partnerships, such as with Desdemona Apparel, showcasing their dedication to the local music scene​.


MIM

MIM is a Malaysian post-rock band known for their evocative and cinematic soundscapes that combine ambient textures with powerful rhythms. Their music is instrumental, offering listeners a journey of emotions through sound alone. In 2023, MIM released their latest album titled “Arakian,” which further cemented their position in the Malaysian post-rock scene. The album showcases their signature atmospheric style, expanding on their previous works, like the EP “Runut Dalam Jeda.” Notable tracks such as “Kodokushi” continue to reflect their ability to tell profound stories without words, using only the power of their music.


Seru

Seru is a Malaysian band blending folk and post-rock elements, creating atmospheric melodies and introspective lyrics. Their debut album, “Sulung,” released on July 29, 2023, features nine tracks, showcasing their unique sound and emotive performances. Gaining traction in the indie music scene in 2024, Seru contributes to the vibrant Malaysian music culture and reflects a growing interest in genre-blending.


Dirgahayu

Dirgahayu, an instrumental rock band from Kuala Lumpur, embodies the vibrant and innovative spirit of the Southeast Asian music scene with their unique blend of math rock elements and intricate rhythms. Their debut single, “Bahawasa-nya,” received significant attention, and their full-length album “Commemorate!” deepens their connection to Malaysian history, showcasing their commitment to experimentation and creativity.
