One of the best things about music is how it sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Maybe it’s an algorithm working its magic, a friend slipping a track into a playlist, or one of those late-night deep dives that turn into a full-blown obsession. No matter how it happens, there’s always something new (or at least new to me) waiting to be discovered.
This February, I stumbled upon a lineup of tracks that shook up my musical world – some with mind-bending genre blends, others steeped in cultural depth. From electronic-infused rock to hip-hop mythology, these songs clung to me long after the first listen. Let’s dive in.
1. Sakanaction – “Wasurerarenaino”

If nostalgia and the future had a lovechild, it would sound like Sakanaction. “Wasurerarenaino” is drenched in shimmering synths and layered atmospheres, creating a track that feels like a dream you don’t want to wake up from. The title translates to “Unforgettable,” and that’s exactly what it is – a meditation on fleeting memories and the desperate hope to hold onto them. Ichiro Yamaguchi’s emotive vocals float over pulsing beats, making this the kind of song that lingers in your mind like a half-remembered summer night.
2. Ruby Ibarra – “Bakunawa” Feat. Ouida, Han Han & June Millington

What do you get when you mix hip-hop, Filipino mythology, and razor-sharp lyricism? A song that feels like a revolution. “Bakunawa” draws inspiration from the legendary moon-eating dragon of Philippine folklore, turning it into a metaphor for resistance and cultural reclamation. Ruby Ibarra and her powerhouse collaborators weave together multiple languages, spoken word, and fierce rap verses, crafting a sonic tapestry as rich as the heritage it honours.
With lines like “Sinusubukan na naman ni Bakunawa kainin ang buwan” (“Once again, Bakunawa tries to swallow the moon”), the song becomes a battle cry against erasure. It’s more than music – it’s history, storytelling, and defiance wrapped in rhythm and poetry.
3. Methosa – “Bangun Orang Waras”

Ever listen to a song that feels like an out-of-body experience? “Bangun Orang Waras” (Awakening of the Sane) is a hypnotic trip through psychedelic guitars, meditative beats, and haunting vocals. But don’t let the dreamy soundscape fool you – underneath it all, the lyrics tackle real-world struggles, questioning democracy, corruption, and economic disparity.
It’s the kind of track that makes you feel like you’re floating through space while contemplating life’s biggest injustices. The chorus serves as a wake-up call, urging listeners to stay vigilant. The eerie, introspective mood sticks with you long after the final note fades.
4. Creepy Nuts – “Otonoke”

Creepy Nuts never miss, and “Otonoke” proves it. Created as the opening theme for the anime “Dandadan”, the track captures the chaotic, supernatural energy of the series perfectly. R-Shitei, one half of the duo, explained that the song draws a parallel between spirits and the emotional connections between musicians and listeners – a poetic touch that adds even more depth.
Musically, it’s a rollercoaster. Rapid-fire raps, playful yet razor-sharp wordplay, and a production style that blends old-school hip-hop with a modern twist – it’s got everything. DJ Matsunaga keeps the beats dynamic and engaging, while R-Shitei’s delivery demands multiple listens to catch all the clever nuances. Eerie yet energetic, “Otonoke” is the perfect sonic match for Dandadan’s blend of humour, horror, and action.
Lee Heemoon – “Heosongsewol Maleola”

Some discoveries feel like stumbling into an entirely new world, and Lee Heemoon’s music is exactly that. “Heosongsewol Maleola” is a masterclass in blending traditional Korean pansori with modern avant-garde experimentation. It’s dramatic, theatrical, and constantly shifting between haunting vocals and rhythmic explosions, making it feel like both a historical artifact and a cutting-edge experiment.
There’s something deeply captivating about how the track respects tradition while pushing it forward. It’s rare to find music that feels this raw yet this polished – like stepping into an ancient tale retold with electric guitars and bold rhythms.
