We often say things we don’t mean, either in jest or thoughtlessly. However, Chinese internet celebrity 欧可爱’s (transliteration: Ou Ke Ai) lighthearted joke about sleeping in the sea unfortunately came true when she drowned during a car accident in Wanning, Hainan.
The 24-year-old internet celeb, famous for her love of travelling and motorcycles, reportedly passed away on 29th December after a fatal car accident. Her loss devastated many, with some even pointing out the irony of her comments where she had joked about not returning home.

On 29th December, the young lady had gathered with other motorcycle enthusiasts at Riyue Bay in Wanning. Around 5:30am, she left the area by car with three others whom she had met at the party. However, as the car turned onto the elevated highway, it reportedly went over the edge and fell into the river below.
While the others managed to escape the car safely, the internet celeb was reportedly stuck as her window was not opened. They tried going back to rescue her, but claimed they struggled to open her window as well. Unfortunately, she did not survive the accident.
Since the news of her passing, fans and friends have expressed their condolences. However, a few also pointed out the irony of a few comments she had made, prior to her passing. Allegedly, she had jokingly told netizens she “(will) sleep in the sea” and that she “won’t be returning” when asked when she would go back to her hometown, Guiyang.

The 24-year-old’s family shared yesterday (1st January) that her body had been cremated and that her ashes would be brought home to Guiyang. Police have allegedly declined to give further information regarding the crash. Still, we pray those who knew her will find peace in her passing.
