Many Hong Kong stars who have visited Malaysia have praised the country, the people and the food. Director and actor Alfred Cheung (張堅庭) is one such visitor, and one aspect of Malaysia seems to have left a deep impression on him.
On 7th May 2025 (Wednesday), the filmmaker updated his Facebook account to share about his recent trip to Kuala Lumpur. According to Alfred, he was here on holiday with his niece and a group of friends. In his post, the 69-year-old included photos of his accommodation, which was his niece’s home in the city. Alfred spoke fondly of the luxurious space, noting the windows with a great view of the night sky.
Continuing his praise for Malaysia, Alfred said the country seems like a great option for a second home, listing several positive points as a Hong Kong native. He explained, “Cantonese is widely spoken here, and prices are attractive,” before noting that it was not the right time for him to buy a property. While there were many good points, Alfred said Malaysia’s cleanliness left the biggest impression on him.
He wrote, “The Malays are more strict than the Chinese, perhaps because of their religious teachings. Their bathroom may be old, but it’s always clean. There is no smell of urine.” Alfred then shared an anecdote from when he stopped for a toilet break during his visit to Cameron Highlands. He said, “The cleanliness stood out. The place wasn’t neglected, even though we were in a remote area.” The director then quipped that Hong Kong diners should reflect.
Alfred ends his post with more praise for Malaysians, lauding their warmth and humility. He said, “They’re easily happy and have close-knit family relationships, which I genuinely envy.” Many local netizens have reacted to the post, sharing welcome messages for the director. Some also thanked him for his praise of Malaysia. Funnily enough, a few Hong Kong natives seconded his opinion on public restrooms.
