The highly anticipated final season of “Squid Game” (오징어 게임) is set to hit home screens in June, with its new teaser trailer offering a glimpse into the action of what’s to come in the death games. Remaining as one of Netflix’s most popular shows, fans have awaited the second piece of the finale, which will determine the fate of the games in itself.
Smashing multiple records with Season 2 in December 2024, the show broke the record for most views for a show in its premiere week and has entered “The Most Popular Non-English TV” list in just three days. “Squid Game 2” currently stands at #2 with 192.4 million views, second to Season 1’s viewership, which amounted to 265.2 million.
The new season picks up from Season 2’s devastating cliffhanger, after Gi-Hun’s (Player 456) failed attempt at dismantling the games from within, which resulted in the betrayal and loss of his closest ally, Jung-Bae (Player 390). Still haunted by the past, Gi-hun is more determined than ever to break down the death games once and for all, but he faces new perils — including the Front Man, who shockingly infiltrated their rebellion disguised as Player 001.
The newly released trailer opens with pink guards carrying a black box — the very coffins used by the guards for fallen players — to the resting area of the games. Players approach the box with hesitance but curiosity, and opening the lid reveals Gi-Hun inside. As he awakens, viewers are transported to the beginning of a new game, one with a massive gumball machine dispenser that dispenses red and blue balls. The rules are yet to be revealed, but we have a feeling that each ball represents the perilous fates that will determine the next challenge.
Familiar faces return: The Front Man, detective Hwang Jun-ho, and players Myung-gi (Player 333), Dae-ho (Player 388), Hyun-ju (Player 120), Yong-sik (Player 007), Geum-ja (Player 149), Jun-hee (Player 222), Min-su (Player 125), Nam-gyu (Player 124), and the pink guard No-eul. As the suspense builds, the final moments echo with the mysterious cries of a baby.
In the striking teaser art, Gi-hun stands amidst a sea of black boxes tied with pink ribbons. He looks upwards, captured in a moment of contemplation and resolve. What awaits him and the other players in the games?
